<!-- table:480 -->

Beginner Level
Beginner Level
The Beginner level is designed for players who have never played mahjong before. After learning basic tile play and winning procedures, players can understand the idea of yaku on top of the basic winning hand structure. This version defines the seven most basic, common, and accessible yaku.
Yaku Classification and Point Table
The Beginner level contains 7 yaku. In the table below, each row represents one yaku series. Yaku in the same series share the same winning-hand rationale. Series are grouped by broad type and category.
<!-- table:480 -->
Type - Category - 5 Points - 10 Points
Form - All Sequences
Number - All Simples
Quads - One Quad
Honors - Value Honor
One Suit - Identical Sequences - Two Identical Sequences
One Suit - Consecutive Sequences - Half Straight
Three Suits - Two Similar Sequences
Yaku Definitions
Points - Yaku - Definition
5 - All Sequences - A winning hand composed of four sequences and a pair
5 - All Simples - A winning hand containing no terminals or honor tiles
5 - Half Straight - Two sequences in one suit made from six consecutive numbers
5 - Two Similar Sequences - Two sequences with the same numbers in two different suits
10 - One Quad - One quad
10 - Value Honor - A triplet of the seat wind or any dragon tile
10 - Two Identical Sequences - Two identical sequences in one suit
Scoring and Payment
When a hand wins, its yaku are added together according to the high-score method and the no-reuse-within-category principle. The high-score method means that if a hand can be divided in multiple ways, the division producing the highest score is used. No reuse within category means that each sequence, triplet, and pair in the winning hand may be used only once within the same yaku-series category, while it may be used across different categories.
The Beginner level uses the 1-2 discard payment method. On a self-draw win, all three opponents pay twice the hand score H, or 2H. On a discard win, the discarder pays 2H, and the other two players each pay H.
<!-- table:480 -->
Win Type - Paying Player - Payment
Self-draw - All three opponents - -2H
Discard win - Discarder - -2H
Discard win - Non-discarding opponents - -H
Minimum Score to Win
The standard minimum score for the Beginner level is 5 points. A hand may win if it satisfies any yaku in the table. For complete beginners, the minimum may be removed so that any basic four-sets-and-a-pair winning hand may win. A hand that has no yaku, also called a Chicken Hand, is counted as 1 point.
